Officer Vance was only an officer for a few weeks.
On August 26, 1927 at 7:40 p.m., Officer Vance and his partner William Clark responded to a disturbance run at the Early Delicatasen, 210 Burnett Avenue, with a suspect armed with a butcher knife. A scuffle ensued and both officers were shot. Officer Vance died at 11:50 p.m. at City Hospital. Officer Clark sustained a gunshot to his leg. The suspect escaped and was captured 2 days later.
