The Louisville Metro Officers
and Families Relief Fund

On January 5, 2001 my son-in-law was injured in the line of duty.  He was pinned between a criminal's van and an unmarked police vehicle.  The criminal was shot and killed.  My son-in-law received a broken foot and a crushed leg and the other officer was placed on administrative leave after shooting and killing the driver. Both were off work for many months.  They were unable to go to court, work off duty or receive overtime. As many young officers do, they worked a lot of off duty.  Financially, they lost thousands of dollars in income. The Auxiliary decided that we needed to do something to assist the officers and their families faced with a line of duty incident or personal tragedy.   We held Poker Runs and Trivial Pursuit games to fund our venture.  For three years, we operated on less than $3,000 a year.

Last fall, we were given the opportunity to offer payroll deduction to active officers to the fund.  With the help of our sworn, this year we expect income of over $17,000, including a $5,000 donation received from National City Bank.  Additionally, Sgt. Mike Shugart, our local Police and Fire Insurance Association representative has generously donated a portion of his commission to the Relief Fund. For more information on the insurance, click on the link for Police and Fire Insurance Association: pfia.net.   Brooks Realtors also donates a portion of the sales commission to the Relief Fund if an officer buys or sells their home using Pat (Retired LPD officer) or Lucy Brooks.  They can be reached at 502-905-8148.

In the last 4 years, we have awarded financial assistance to over 40 officers and their families.  These include terminally ill spouses, seriously ill children, officers seriously sick or injured and a line of duty death. As the need for financial assistance grows, so does the need for funds.  We continue to hold fundraisers, but the donation through payroll deductions has allowed us to give more aid to officers in need and for this we thank you.
