This is how River City Lodge No. 614 came to be....

After many years of discussion and rhetoric, the City of Louisville and the County of Jefferson decided to merge and the item was placed on the ballot.  As a result, on January 6, 2003, the city of “Louisville Metro” was born combining the two former government entities.

With merger of the government came the merger of two police departments.  This naturally created the need for two Fraternal Orders of Police to merge.  The former Louisville Division of Police had been represented by Louisville Lodge No. 6 since November 14, 1960, and the former Jefferson County Police Department had been represented by Jefferson County Lodge No. 14 since April 1, 1961.   Both lodges met to work out the logistics of becoming one united lodge.

Meetings were held and decisions were made both to establish a Board of Directors as well as which location would become the new lodge hall.  A lot of dedicated people worked very hard and long and those decisions resulted in a State appointed President and Board taking office, and the current location on Price Lane Road becoming the official home of River City Lodge No. 614.

On December 20, 2005 as the agreement stated, the first “member-elected” President and Board of Directors took office.  This started a new plan instituted by the new Board which has really taken hold.  The lodge hall has undergone and continues to undergo a long overdue face-lift which includes a new look to the business office.

Currently the lodge represents 1,147 sworn officers and 900 retired members.  We are the largest FOP lodge in the state and the 11th largest lodge in the nation.  Our lodge is part of the largest union representing law enforcement in the country which lists membership at over 333,000.  Our National President, Chuck Canterbury, has dinner with the President of the United States at least twice a year by invitation.  No other labor leader can claim that privilege.

Hard work and dedication by the former lodges’ administrations are why we have one, united membership today, and River City Lodge No. 614 will continue that dedication and hard work to represent the membership proudly in brother and sisterhood.
